The University of Rio Grande women’s basketball team announced the singing of guard Aly Herren to the 2013 recruiting class Wednesday via RioRedStorm.com.

Herren, a 5-foot-5 guard led the William Mason Comets to a 22-2 record this past season, falling to Kettering Fairmont 67-63 in overtime in the Division I regional semifinals.  She averaged four points, three assists and two steals per game, and made 23 three-pointers in her senior season

The sharp-shooter was a three-year varsity letterer for the Comets, starting in her junior and senior seasons.

Herren had interest from Shawnee State University, Cincinnati State Technical and Community College and the University of Mount Union. She told RioRedStorm.com that she chose the RedStorm because she felt like she could continue the success she had in high school, at Rio Grande.

“She showed us that she has the ability to shoot the three,” said head coach David Smalley to RioRedStorm.com.  “She's going to give us some added depth in the backcourt."

The RedStorm can use the additional help, the team finished the 2012-2013 season 8-22 overall and in last place (2-18) in the Mid-South Conference. Rio also will be without their leading scorer from 2012-2013. Guard Shardai Morrison-Fountain averaged 16.8 points-per-game for the RedStorm, and also led the team in minutes played.

But Herren will face stiff competition at the point guard position this upcoming season from fellow 2013 class member Sharday Baines and three returning guards, including senior Kate Hammond  who finished second on the team in points-per-game with 11.9 in 2012-2013.
