Ohio drivers required to show proof of insurance could provide that information using smartphones under a proposed change in state law.

The bill would allow drivers to prove they are insured through information on an electronic wireless communications device rather than the typical printed card. Drivers could provide law enforcement officials and others with that information stored on digital devices such as cellphones, laptops and tablets.

There would be restrictions on what information those officials could view on the devices.

An official with the Ohio Insurance Institute says 24 states have adopted similar rules. He says the institute supports the bill to help cut printing and postage costs and increase customer convenience.

The Columbus Dispatch reports the House Transportation, Public Safety and Homeland Security committee is reviewing the bill.
