Southeast Ohio's already-thriving bluegrass community is about to expand. This Saturday, Hocking Hills Adventure Trek in Logan is opening The Trek Theatre, featuring weekly bluegrass concerts and storytelling.

"We’ve created Trek Theatre to showcase the finest bluegrass and storytelling performers in Ohio," said owner Jim Stratton. "There are tons of great outdoor activities offered to area visitors throughout the day. This will add something completely different to their weekend activities."

Since opening in 2011, Hocking Hills Adventure Trek has been introducing visitors to the region's hidden trails and beautiful forests. Now guests are invited to enjoy a new family entertainment venue, located in a rustic, natural amphitheatre nestled in the pines alongside a flowing stream.

The summer concert series gets underway this weekend with Scioto Station, with Saturday shows continuing through Labor Day weekend. Bands Open Rail, Grassahol, Timbrewolves, Slate Ridge, Relentless Mules, Strung Up, Death by Banjo and True Blue are scheduled to perform.

"One thing we know about bluegrass is how well-connected the pickers and players are. We built our schedule through word of mouth and booked bands based the recommendations of everyone we spoke with," explained Stratton. "You'll see some of the best bluegrass bands in Ohio on our stage this year and we look forward to making Trek Theatre the premier venue in Ohio for summer bluegrass, folk and acoustic presentations."

Storytelling is also intertwined in Trek Theatre’s local cultural presentations. Shawnee Storyteller, Wehyehpihehrsehnhwah (Ron Hatten) presents "The Circle of Life" most evenings at 6 p.m. Small groups of visitors embark on forest treks where they're greeted by the sounds of Wehyehpihehrsehnhwah's hand-carved Native American flute, surrounded by caves and waterfalls.

"Everyone that's experienced his storytelling has loved it," said Stratton. "He's fluent in the life, song and history of his people and a gifted, authentic storyteller."

The Trek Theatre is located beside the Hocking Hills Welcome Center on State Route 664 in Logan, Ohio. Promotional discounts are offered regularly for tickets purchased in advance through www.TrekTheatre.com. Gates open at 5:30 p.m., opening acts begin at 6 p.m. and headliners start at 7 p.m.
