Summer's here, and the time is right for dancin'...on Court Street.
Martha & The Vandellas may quibble with the wording, but for thousands of Athenians and out-of-towners, there's no better place to party.
Boogie on the Bricks, Athens' annual Family Music & Arts Festival, returns this Saturday, featuring 12 hours of live music, a beer garden, a food court, local merchants, artists and non-profit organizations, kids' activities and more.
Festival organizers are confident that this year's musical lineup offers something for everyone, from the "gypsy punk" of Qiet to The Royales' soul-stirring R&B and "stomp-your-feet goodness" from the evening's headliners, The Rumpke Mountain Boys.
Judy Wymer, chair of the non-profit Boogie on the Bricks board, is excited about the fest, which is now in its ninth year.
"People love this event. It's a wonderful time to relax, check out some local art, eat some delicious food and hear great music," she said. "The kids' area is bigger this year. While mom or dad are playing with the kids, the other parent can be dancing on the bricks, enjoying a cold beverage with friends."
Wymer was quick to add that Boogie on the Bricks couldn't happen each year without help from community sponsors.
"Southeast Beverage and Peoples Bank really came through," she said. "Jackie O's, The Pigskin, Casa Nueva, Tony’s, Carpenter & Associates, Power 105, WOUB, Zonez and Minuteman Press have all helped as well. We really couldn’t do it without their ongoing support."
Free parking will be available all day in the Athens City Parking Garage, located at the corner of East Washington and South College Streets, just a half-block from the festival. The music stage will be located at the intersection of Court and West State.
