The state of Ohio will receive more than $300,000 in federal funds to pay for a portion of the fees charged to low-income students taking advanced placement tests.

The U.S. Department of Education on Tuesday announced the grants given to 42 states. The money is expected to pay all but $10 of the cost of each exam.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan in a statement said AP courses give students a jumpstart in college by challenging to develop critical-thinking skills.

Duncan says the federal funds will eliminate financial barriers and allow more minority students to gain access to rigorous AP tests.

The agency says the funding per state is based on state estimates of the number of tests that low-income students are expected to take.
