West Virginia health officials are receiving more than $1 million in grant funding to survey and respond to infectious diseases.

The state Department of Health and Human Resources says the funding is part of the Epidemiology and Laboratory Cooperative Agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Charleston Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/147K7rb) that all states get funding from the agreement but West Virginia was one of the first to receive money in 1995.

In West Virginia, the grant supports microbiologists in labs, epidemiologists in various settings, health care for certain infections, foodborne illness, influenza and some diseases.

The funds also support information technology for the state's Office of Epidemiology and Prevention Services.
