Maysville Bests New Lexington At Home
< < Back toThe Maysville Panthers beat a visiting New Lexington team Friday night, 28-6.
New Lexington’s offense was nearly non-existent in the first quarter, failing to convert a first down during the period. On the other sideline, Maysville’s offensive line dominated in the trenches, allowing halfbacks C.J Harris and Eli Chambers to run wild. Chambers capped off the first quarter with a 10-yard scamper into the end zone, putting Maysville up, 7-0.
New Lex came back a different team in the second quarter. Quarterback Collin Russell led the offense to their first first down with a 22-yard pass to Nick Saxton to get New Lex in a rhythm. The momentum appeared to shift quickly when Maysville’s Cougar Clarke picked off Russell and gave the Maysville offense great field position, but New Lex returned the favor when Daniel Abrams intercepted Jacob Miller on the very next play. That pick led to a scoring drive for New Lexington, as Russell threw a 24-yard pass to Saxton for a touchdown. After a missed PAT, Maysville still led, 7-6, with 1:11 left in the half.
Maysville took the field and executed the 2-minute drill perfectly. Starting at their own 35-yard line, the Panthers reached midfield in 30 seconds with the assistance of Jordan Hayes and Eli Chambers. The Hayes-Chambers connection hit again with a 24-yard pass to get Maysville into the red zone with 20 seconds left in the half. Hayes handed the ball off to Harris, who tossed a shovel pass to Chase Roberts for a last-second touchdown. After a failed two-point conversion, Maysville led 13-6 at the end of the half.
It was back and forth between Maysville and New Lex in the third quarter. New Lex put some damage on running back Eli Chambers, who left at the beginning of the third quarter because of an injury. Maysville did not let the loss of Chambers faze them. Miller handed the ball off to Roberts, who ran 29 yards for a touchdown. A botched extra point attempt led to a successful 2-point conversion, giving Maysville a 21-6 lead going into the final quarter.
Maysville held New Lex scoreless in the final quarter, highlighted by a deflected interception, which Jacob Miller returned for a touchdown at the 8:00 mark. The blue and yellow chewed up a lot of clock in those final twelve minutes, giving them a 28-6 victory.
Maysville had a total of 328 yards, 247 yards coming from the running game. New Lex had 228 yards for the night, 187 coming from the passing game.
Maysville (2-0, 2-0 MVL) looks to continue its early win streak on the road against Philo (2-0, 0-0) next week.
New Lex (1-1, 0-1) is looking for a comeback as it plays a visiting Morgan (0-2, 0-1).
