The Marietta College Pioneers Volleyball team opened the 2013 BSN River City Classic with a straight-sets loss to the Bethany College Bison.

Bethany started out strong, amassing a 6-0 lead to start the first set. The Pioneers, however, began to show some life, following with a 7-4 run.

Bethany halted the Marietta run and took control of the action.

The Bison took a commanding lead and didn’t give it up for the rest of the set, taking it 25-16.

Marietta looked to rebound from the first set with a heated second-set offense. They kept the heat on the Bison, but the offensive efficiency of Bethany was too much, leading the Bison to a 9-4 lead and an impressive beginning to a back-and-forth set.

The Pioneers mustered up an offensive comeback to bring the count to a 16-15 Bethany advantage. But they would not get any closer as Bethany closed the set 25-20.

In common fashion, the Bison got off to a great start and threatened to take the third set early. But, again, Marietta mounted an impressive showing that ultimately came up short to lose the final set 25-19.

Bethany led in kills with 50 compared to Marietta’s 34. Errors once again played a major role as Marietta committed 17 to Bethany’s nine.

Sophomore outside hitter Kennedy Clyde led the Pioneers with 10 kills. Junior setter Laura Mauer chipped in 26 assists, eight digs and one ace.

Defensively, senior defensive specialist Amber Wisely and sophomore defensive specialist Mary Ervin added 28 combined digs.

After beginning the season 1-4, Marietta looks to right the ship against Frostsburg State University and Grove City College at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively, on Saturday, Sept. 7.
