President Barack Obama is nominating former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland as one of the alternate representatives to the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

It was among a long list of nominations announced Tuesday by the White House for posts throughout the Obama administration. Strickland's nomination for the mostly ceremonial job would have to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

The Democrat served one term as Ohio's governor during the recession and was defeated in his re-election bid in 2010 by Republican Gov. John Kasich.

Strickland tells The Plain Dealer in Cleveland the job would involve moving to New York, giving speeches and helping the country's ambassador to the United Nations. He says he's looking forward to the new experience.
