Freshman phenom Hailey Hrynewich posted the best one-round score of her young college career to help the Ohio women’s golf team gain sole position of seventh place at the Nittany Lion Invitational on Friday.

Hrynewich led the way for the Bobcats, finishing her first round even at par. Her total score of 72 was tied with six other competitors for the fifth best score after one day. Hrynewich recorded six birdies, three on the front nine and three more on the back nine.

Senior Kristen Helmsdoerfer was not far behind, shooting +4 on the day. Helmsdoerfer finds herself tied for 26th place on the individual leaderboard.

Sophomores Angela Codian and Lauren McKinzie scored +7 and +8, respectively. Codian’s +7 matched her total score through three rounds at the Bobcats’ last tournament, the Redbird Invitational.

Junior Julie Lechner and senior Kara Brinkmann rounded out Ohio’s opening day, with Lechner shooting +6 and Brinkmann going +14. Both women recorded one birdie each.

Fourteen teams participated in the lone 18-hole round that was played in Happy Valley on the first day of the competition. Yale currently sits atop the team standings, after shooting a combined +1 on Friday.

The final two rounds of the tournament will take place on Saturday and Sunday this weekend.
