A strong performance from Ohio’s seniors has the Bobcats in sixth place at The Preview in Fishers, Ill.

After one round of play on Monday, Ohio shot a team score of 326, good for 38 strokes over par at The Hawthorns Golf and Country Club.

Kristen Helmsdoerfer had Ohio’s best score, going +6 through 18 holes. The senior recorded a team-high three birdies and is currently in a 3-way tie for the eighth best individual score of the tournament.

Helmsdoerfer’s daily total was only one stroke better than fellow senior Kara Brinkmann, who went +7 in the first round. Both seniors shot a 36 on the front nine, and Brinkmann parred 13 holes, the most of anyone at the competition.

Freshman Hailey Hrynewich and sophomore Lauren McKinzie both were +12 on Monday, putting them in a tie at 51st on the individual leaderboard.

Sophomore Angela Codian and junior Julie Lechner held the Bobcats highest scores through 18 holes, shooting +13 and +16, respectively.

The Bobcats finished better than the average stroke count on every hole except for the two Par 5 holes, at which the team had the third worst average score.

Toledo holds the top spot after the first day of play. The Rockets’ 304 gives them a commanding seven-stroke lead over tournament host Ball State.

Ohio will look to build on its strong opening round on Tuesday, when the 16-team field will go off in a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.
