National Coming Out Day Celebrated At OU

UPDATE 4:44 p.m. Members of the Ohio University and Athens community gathered in celebration of National Coming Out Day.

About 50 people attended the event on Friday morning.

The rally at the Scripps Amphitheater including remarks from OU Board of Trustees chair Sandra Anderson and Equality Ohio Director Elyzabeth Holford.

People were also invited to come up and share their coming out story – either as a member of the LGBTQ community or as an ally.

There was also a brightly painted door that included phrases like “Be yourself” and “Be fabulous” that people could symbolically “come out” of.


Members of Ohio University’s LGBT community will mark National Coming Out Day with a rally Friday.

The OU LGBT office will be setting up a brightly painted door that includes phrases like “Be yourself” and “Be fabulous" at the Scripps Amphitheater. People will be invited to step through the door and symbolically “come out” and share their coming out stories.

Sandra Anderson, chair of the OU Board of Trustees along with Elyzabeth Holford, director of Equality Ohio are also scheduled to speak.

The event starts at 11 a.m. with a lunch at the Women’s Center following.
