The Lourdes Gray Wolves defeated the Rio Grande RedStorm (8-13, 2-9) in a tightly-contested four-set battle, 26-24, 27-25, 23-25, 25-22.
The first frame of the afternoon saw the two teams go back and forth. The Gray Wolves held the biggest lead, three points, when the score was 9-12. However, the RedStorm chipped away at the Lourdes lead and eventually led 23-21 late in the game. But Rio Grande dropped five of the last six points and lost the first set.
The RedStorm dominated most of the second set. They did not trail at any point during the first 41 points, although the game was tied three times during that time frame. The Gray Wolves went on a four-point run to force set point at 24-21. Just when you thought it was over, Rio Grande survived three set points to force a tie at 24-24. But Lourdes proved to be too tough, winning the game on a 3-1 run.
The third set was all Rio Grande. It trailed just once, 1-0, and held two different five-point leads during the frame. Although Lourdes went on a mini-run late in the set, the RedStorm held tight and won the set by two.
The fourth and final game was just the opposite for the RedStorm. They never lead in the set and there was only one tie, 11-11. Lourdes won the final set by three points, the largest margin of the match.
Rio Grande’s offensive effort was led by Betsy Schramm, who had 15 kills, and Kayla Briley, who added 44 assists. Nicole Ogg led the defensive effort with 18 digs.
The RedStorm are back in action Monday when they travel to the University of Pikeville. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
