For the fifth time this season, the Pioneers were involved in a one-goal match. However, Wilmington’s (9-6-1, 4-3) second half efforts earned them a 2-1 victory over Marietta (2-14, 0-7).
The Pioneers lit up the scoreboard first on a Rachel Hartong penalty kick in the 26th minute. The remainder of the half was a defensive battle with only nine total shots between the two squads.
Both goalkeepers registered two saves in the half.
In the second stanza, the Quakers took over.
Rachelle Bowen tied things up in the 53rd minute on an assisted strike in the box. Six minutes later, Bowen struck again, taking advantage of a cross from Lauren Lewis.
The Quakers controlled the pace of the game in the second half, outshooting the Pioneers, 13-1. In addition, Wilmington earned twice as many corner kicks as Marietta with four opportunities.
Marietta goalkeeper Kaitlyn Pearse had her work cut out for her, facing 10 shots and saving eight of them.
The loss extends Marietta’s losing streak to 12. The Pioneers will look to stop the skid on Tuesday when Otterbein comes to town.
