Penn State's president says the school "cannot undo what has been done" — but that the settlements announced today with 26 young men are a step forward.

The school says it's paying a total of nearly $60 million to the men, over their claims of child sexual abuse at the hands of former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

A lawyer who helped negotiate several of the settlements says his clients are satisfied with them.  The negotiations lasted about a year.

The school still faces six other claims. It says some don't have merit, but others may produce settlements.

Sandusky is seeking a new trial while serving a state prison sentence of 30 to 60 years.

Penn State has spent more than $50 million on other costs related to the Sandusky scandal, including lawyers' fees and public relations expenses.

School president Rodney Erickson says Penn State "must do everything possible to learn from this and ensure it never happens again."
