For the first time since the second week of the season, the Rio Grande RedStorm have lost a soccer match. Rio fell at the hands of the University of Northwestern Ohio Wednesday night by a score of 2-1.

Luiz Filho notched the only goal for the RedStorm in what was not a poor performance from Rio. The goal came at the 83-minute mark and made it a 2-1 contest. The RedStorm attempted 15 shots, compared to five for the Racers. Rio outpaced UNOH in terms of shots on goal 8-3. It just was not in the cards for the No. 1 ranked team.

Sergio Royo and Peguy Ngatch netted the Racers’ two goals on the evening, both in the second half. It was a physical contest all night with both teams vying for position as every ball meant something down the stretch. The whistle rang out through the night dozens of times. 31 fouls were called, and four yellow cards were issued.

The loss was the first for a Rio team that could be described as looking ahead to the Mid-South Conference tournament.

The tournament starts at Evan E. Davis Field for Rio on Thursday Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. against Bluefield College (Va.).
