The Appalachian Progressive Education Center (A.P.E.) will hold an open house on Wednesday, Dec. 11 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at ARTS/West.

The evening will feature two plays written and produced by the children in the Arts After-School Program as well as an introduction to the new Language Center, followed by a reception in the basement.

The first play, Good Guys V.S. Bad Guys, is an epic adventure written by the 5-7 year-old group. It tells the tale of two sides battling for princess fairies, crossing miles of desert, fighting mustache men…and solving hard homework.

The second, The Forest of Riches, details the accounts of the fuzzy woodland creatures, led by the mystical Queen of Cats, in their battle to preserve the magical forest they live within from the evil steampunk ninja and his hordes of villains.

Founded in 2005, the A.P.E. Center has hosted a number of projects, including bully prevention workshops, traveling plays and musicals, and music and theater camps.

Recently, it expanded to include a Language Center on Richland Avenue (in July) and an Arts After-School Program at ARTS/West.

The Arts After-School Program offers affordable arts education and after-school childcare for elementary students. Three days a week are devoted to visual arts and global culture, and two days a week are devoted to theatre and performance.

The Language Center offers foreign language classes for adults and children, starting with full immersion classes for toddlers, up to advanced levels or survival/traveler's language classes for adults. There are also ESL (English as a Second Language) classes.
