Great rebounding and a prevalent fast break offense was not enough to give the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes (2-2, 0-1 TVC-Ohio) a victory over the Vinton County Vikings (2-2, 1-0 TVC-Ohio) in Nelsonville, as the Vikings dominated 80-63.

Nelsonville-York started out the first quarter hot, taking an 8-0 lead halfway through the first quarter. However, Vinton County broke out of their short rut and took the lead in the first quarter, 16-10.

Vinton County continued to be dominant, especially from the arc where Austin Lambert had four 3-pointers in the second quarter. Alex Owings and Chase Wood helped extend the lead to 39-25.

“Their shooting set the tone. We let them get off the field comfortable in the second quarter. That’s the whole ballgame in a nutshell,” said Nelsonville-York coach Jay Kline.

From then on, the Vikings continued to be dominant from the arc and from the paint, adding 41 points in the second half and held onto the lead the rest of the game.

Nelsonville-York struggled to get an offense going. A balanced offensive attack from the perimeter and in the lane was not present for the Buckeyes. However, the Buckeyes did shut down any second shot chances for the Vikings. N-Y outrebounded Vinton County 30 total rebounds to the Vikings’ 17 total rebounds.

The Buckeyes also gave up many points from the charity stripe in the second half. Nelsonville-York was already in the double bonus halfway through the third quarter. The Vikings made the Buckeyes pay, shooting 85% from the free throw line.

Even though the Buckeyes did fall, junior Colt Adams stepped up in the leadership role tonight. Adams put 23 points on the board and attacked the same boards with three rebounds. Senior Josh Fayette chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds on the night.

The Vikings found their leaders in junior Max Ward and Wood, who put up a combined 31 points for Vinton County. Ward also had three assists and Wood had three rebounds on the night.

Vinton County will host the undefeated Athens Bulldogs on Friday, Dec. 20.

Nelsonville-York will host the Alexander Spartans (2-1) on Friday, as well.
