The Nelsonville-York basketball program finished up its last games of the 2013 calendar year this week, going 2-1 overall. Both the boys and girls programs will enter the New Year with winning records and strong chances of winning the TVC-Ohio.

BOYS

The N-Y boys entered the week with a record of 4-2, and looked to improve it with games on back-to-back nights.

The Buckeyes began with a trip to TVC-Hocking opponent Miller on Dec. 27. N-Y came off its holiday break focused, defeating the Miller Falcons 83-71. This marked N-Y’s highest point total of the season and improved the Buckeyes to a record of 5-2.

The next night, the Buckeyes traveled to Berne Union of the Mid-State League for a non-conference matchup. N-Y would come up short in a nail-biter, falling to the Berne Union Rockets by a score of 61-58.

The Buckeyes’ 1-1 week sends them into 2014 with a 5-3 record. The team still has a conference record of 1-1, and currently sits in fourth place in the TVC-Ohio. N-Y will next travel to Athens on Jan. 3 to take on the Bulldogs.

GIRLS

The Nelsonville-York Lady Buckeyes, looking to recover from a mid-season three game losing streak, entered the week with only one matchup on their slate.

On Dec. 28, the Lady Buckeyes traveled to Southern High School to take on the Lady Tornadoes. N-Y came out firing on all cylinders, and handily defeated the Lady Tornadoes 62-30. The 32-point winning margin was the Lady Buckeyes’ second largest of the season.

The victory lifted the Lady Buckeyes to an overall record of 8-3. They remain 2-2 in the TVC-Ohio, and are currently in third place. The Nelsonville-York girls will next take the court when they host the Amanda-Clearcreek Aces of the Mid-State League on Jan. 7.
