West Virginia schools shuttered by a chemical spill that contaminated the water supply will remain closed Thursday.

Students in Kanawha, Boone, Lincoln and Putnam counties, and some in Fayette County, won't have class again.

Schools have been closed since Friday, the day after a chemical spill tainted a nine-county region's water supply for 300,000 people.

West Virginia American Water Company has lifted the water use ban for about half its customers.

The West Virginia National Guard and other organizations are pitching in to help schools properly flush out the coal-cleaning chemical.

Schools also need to clean cafeterias to remove any possible left-over chemical traces.
