The ‘Cats struggled from the floor all night on the way to their second consecutive loss Thursday night to the Akron Zips 80-56.

The Zips simply outplayed the ‘Cats as they moved the ball consistently up and down the court. The Zips got off to a quick start with a 9-2 run and buried the ‘Cats from the get go. Ohio’s main offensive weapon this season has been the long ball, however they hit two out of the 24 3-pointers they attempted Thursday night. As the saying goes, if you live by the 3-pointer you can die by the 3-pointer. The ‘Cats simply just couldn’t hit the shots they needed to.

One positive the Bobcats can take away from the loss was their success from the charity stripe. Ohio hit 24 of its 28 free throws, which is the best it has done all season. Quiera Lampkins chalked up a double-double for the ‘Cats with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Kat Yelle was Ohio’s leading scorer with 14 points.

The Zips dished out 21 assists, compared to Ohio’s four, and hit almost double the amount of shots the ‘Cats did. Both teams put up 64 shots, Akron made 29, while the Bobcats hit 15. Ohio finished the night shooting 23.4 percent from the field.

The Zips’ leading scorers Rachel Tecca and Hanna Luburgh combined for 41 of the Zips’ 80 points. Akron shot over 45 percent from the field and hit 17 of their 21 free throws. The Zips had at least one assist from nine different players. Freshman guard Hannah Plybon scored 16 points and had four rebounds.

The loss drops the ‘Cats to 8-9 (3-3) on the season. Akron improves to 9-8 (3-3) with the win. Ohio looks to bounce back from its two consecutive conference losses, Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. against the Toledo Rockets in the Convocation Center.
