State officials are testing the running water in 130 West Virginia schools after a chemical spill in Charleston.

An interagency team began testing Tuesday for two chemicals that entered the water system Jan. 9.

The spill spurred a water-use ban for 300,000 people in nine counties that was later lifted. For days, officials deemed the water safe only for flushing toilets and dousing fires.

Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety spokesman Lawrence Messina says testing results should be available Friday or Saturday.

The testing covers 130 public and private schools. Messina says schools have enough bottled water for cooking and drinking to last at least through Friday.

Students in some counties have had limited class time this month due to the water crisis, snowfall and frigid temperatures.
