Ohio Volleyball’s Theis Leaving For Marquette

Ohio volleyball head coach Ryan Theis accepted a head coaching position at Marquette, Ohio Athletics announced Friday. 

Theis took over the head coaching job in Athens in 2008 and over six seasons posted an overall record of 144-54. He led the 'Cats to four Mid-American Conference tournament championships, including one this past season. In 2005, Theis took the Green and White the the Regional Semifinals of the NCAA tournament. In four NCAA tournament appeareances with the Bobcats, Theis went 2-4.

"I am excited to return to my home state and Marquette has always been a place where I knew I wanted to be," Theis said in a Marquette Athletics press release. "I am so thrilled that 15 years after I started my coaching career I am able to make that dream a reality. I have always had a great deal of respect for the University and love the city of Milwaukee. I am excited to compete for Big East championships and push deep into the NCAA Tournament."

Ohio Director of Athletics Jim Schaus released a statement through the Ohio Athletics Twitter account. 

"Ryan has done a tremendous job during his six seasons. He will be missed. I'm happy for him to be able to go back to his hometown. Over the past decade, we have built a national level program and are committed to its future success. I am confident that we will attract and hire a high caliber coach who will continue to lead us to excellence." – Jim Schaus, Ohio Director of Athletics

Former players under Theis also commented on the head coach's move to Marquette.

"Marquette isn't just getting a great coaching staff but great people. I'll forever be grateful for Ryan for a great season and for providing me an amazing opportunity. If I could transfer and play a sixth year, I would definitely head to Marquette." – Alexis Pinson, Ohio volleyball graduate student

The Marquette Golden Eagles went 26-6 overall and 15-1 in the Big East in the 2013-14 season. They were eliminated from the NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship in the second round by Illinois. 

Marquette's head coach position opened up on Feb. 3 when former coach Bond Shymansky departed for a head coaching position at the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Update: 12:12 p.m.: Per Jason Arkley of the Athens Messenger, Ryan Theis is leaving Ohio to take the head coaching job at Marquette. 


Ohio University has listed a job opening for head volleyball coach, which means Ryan Theis could be moving on from the program.

The university has yet to confirm Theis has left the program or where he will be going. WOUB is working to confirm the reports.
