Ohio AG: Beware Of Online Dating Scams

If you are looking for love online, Ohio’s Attorney General has one word for you – beware. Mike DeWine says his office is seeing an increase in the number of Ohioans who are being scammed online by people who pretend to want a relationship but really just want money.
"We’re averaging, last year I think we had 50 complaints and it’s going up," Dewine said. "And what we don’t know is how many people lose money and never complain to us. So we can multiply that 50 by many I’m sure. And these are people who just lose money and they are so ashamed and humiliated."
DeWine says of the complaints filed last year, the average reported loss was more than 25 thousand with the highest reported loss at 600,000 dollars. The scammers usually claim to need the money for some sort of family emergency.
