Rio Grande outlasted the Gannon Golden Knights on Tuesday, and picked up the 5-4 victory in Beckley, W.Va. It was the RedStorm’s second victory in a row, after previously dropping three straight.

The Golden Knights matched Rio Grande’s scoring throughout the first few innings, but the RedStorm defense and late-game pitching helped them close out the game. Gannon was led by designated hitter Aaron Cox, who went 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI. Sean Sutton also added another two hits and a stolen base and a run.

All of the scoring came in the first five innings.

Gannon was up 4-0 until the bottom of the fourth, where the RedStorm stormed back with four runs of their own. Luiz Jimenez had a key triple in the inning – his only hit on the night – that brought in two Rio Grande baserunners. Rio added another run in the next inning to make it 5-4 and relied on its pitching to hold off the Golden Knight attack.

Trent Downs and Eric Ford each went three up and three down to finish the game in the eighth and ninth innings.

Rio Grande takes on the Shawnee State Bears Friday and Saturday to open its conference schedule.
