Officials cleaning up thousands of gallons of crude oil that leaked from a pipeline into a southwest Ohio nature preserve hope to complete the emergency phase of cleanup in about a week.

Federal officials estimate more than 20,000 gallons of oil leaked into the Oak Glen Nature Preserve west of Cincinnati. The pipeline was repaired and reopened Sunday.

Authorities said Tuesday that the next phase to clean up residual oil and have long-term air and water monitoring might take months.

Officials have said oil leaked from a 5-inch crack in the pipeline, but they haven't determined what caused the crack.

Officials say no problems have been found with air quality or local water wells, but at least 13 small creatures contaminated with oil have died.
