An idea for growing mushrooms has earned a John Marshall High School student a $10,000 college scholarship.

Sierra Cook of Glen Dale came up with the concept for Marshall Mushrooms, a small business that grows and markets shitake and maitake mushrooms to Ohio Valley restaurants, grocery and health food stores.

The senior was among eight finalists who competed in the inaugural high school business plan competition last weekend at West Virginia University's College of Business and Economics.

The competition is part of a five-year agreement between the WVU business school and the state Department of Education. The competition's purpose is to expose students to entrepreneurial opportunities.
