The Athens Farmers Market will remain at the Market on State for the next year under amended hours.

According to Farmers Market Board President Larry Cowdery, members of the market met Thursday and voted to remain in the parking lot of the mall. He said that the farmers market is expected to sign a one-year lease with the owners of the mall.

Farmers market members also approved changing operating hours, which had been 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., to the new hours of 9 a.m. to noon for both the Wednesday and Saturday markets.

Cowdery said the hours were changed "in order not to conflict with the other businesses in the area."

Texas Roadhouse doesn't open until 4 p.m. on Wednesdays, but opens at 11 a.m. on Saturdays for lunch.

The Athens Farmers Market had been looking for a possible new location after it was announced that Texas Roadhouse was building a restaurant in the mall parking lot where the market had been held. Since construction of the restaurant began, the market has shifted further east in the parking lot toward the Athena Grand theater.

"We especially would like to thank the Athena Grand and the Texas Roadhouse for their cooperation and for allowing us and our customers to use some of their parking spaces," Cowdery said.

Thursday's decision gives the market another year to hunt for an ideal permanent location if the market feels the need to do so.
