Dangerous Police Chase Ends in Arrest
< < Back to dangerous-police-chase-ends-arrestHUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) — A man is facing eight charges after an early morning pursuit that lasted nearly half an hour.
Officers with the Huntington detachment of West Virginia State Police arrested Terry Gene Garner, 48, for running red lights, stop signs and almost hitting oncoming vehicles.
According to the criminal complaint, Garner's wife called 911 from the vehicle. She told dispatchers her husband was refusing to stop because he didn't want to go back to prison and he had been smoking crack inside the vehicle.
During the chase, a state police cruiser flipped and went into a creek.
When Garner was finally stopped, police say he started kicking an officer and refused to remove his hands from underneath him.
Police say he jumped into the rear cab of the truck, grabbed a crack pipe and said "let me just get one more hit."
Once in custody, officers identified Garner and determined that his license had been revoked for DUI. Garner was convicted of DUI (third offense) on 11/13/2009.
Ms. Garner told police in a written statement that when her husband refused to pull over, he pulled out a knife and threatened to kill himself to avoid going back to prison.
Garner was then taken into custody and transported to Cabell Huntington Hospital for treatment.
His list of charges includes reckless driving, brandishing a dangerous weapon, battery on a police officer, domestic violence, fleeing a vehicle while DUI, driving under the influence (3rd offense), obstructing an officer and possession of controlled substances.
