An Athens man has died after crashing his motorcycle Saturday afternoon.

The Athens Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the two-vehicle fatal crash occurred on Stage Coach Road, near Ervin Road in Athens County shortly after 3:00 p.m.

A news release from the Highway Patrol post said Mike Lewis Thomas, 54, of Athens, was driving a 2001 Suzuki motorcycle northbound on Stage Coach Road when he drove left of center striking a van driven by Cheryl W. Vanhook, 46, also of Athens.

Mr. Thomas was transported by Athens County EMS to the O’Bleness Hospital in Athens where he died. Vanhook was not injured.

Thomas was not wearing a protective helmet. Alcohol is not suspected as being a factor in the crash.

The Highway Patrol said as the warm weather approaches motorists should be cautious as more motorcyclists will be on the road.
