A federal judge says the Ohio Legislature can join the state in appealing his ruling on early voting changes in the swing state.

U.S. District Judge Peter Economus granted a request Monday from the Republican-controlled General Assembly to intervene in the case for the purpose of the appeal.

Last week, Economus blocked an Ohio law that trims early voting and ordered the state's elections chief to set an expanded voting schedule.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio brought the lawsuit on behalf of the Ohio chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and others. They claim two measures would make it difficult for Ohioans to vote and unfairly affect black voters.

Attorneys for the General Assembly say it has the right to defend its legislation.
