Logan- Hocking Contract Negotiations Continue

Contract negotiations continue between the Logan-Hocking School District and The Ohio Association of Public School Employees, but an agreement has yet to be reached. There are 160 employees in the district affected by the contract negotiations, including bus drivers, food service personnel, administrative assistants and custodians. The negotiations could lead to a strike.


Federal Judge in West Virginia Has Delayed Gay Marriage Ruling

U.S. District Judge Robert Chambers in Huntington says due to the “overlap of issues” presented in the West Virginia case, he put the case on hold this week pending a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in a similar Virginia case. The Supreme Court delayed a decision in August in Richmond, Virginia that struck down that state’s gay marriage ban.


Student Senate Treasurer Resigned

Ohio University Student Senate Treasurer, Carter Philips, resigned at the Wednesday night meeting claiming “the body has not just stumbled, it has irredeemably managed to fall.” Zainab Kandeh is now the Senate treasurer. We’ll have the full story on our website and on Newswatch at 5:30.  


Union Street Closure

West Union Street will be closed between Depot Street and S. High Street Thursday from 11 a.m. to approximately 8 p.m. and Friday from 7 p.m. until the work is completed. Questions and concerns may be directed to the City of Athens Engineering and Public Works, 740-593-7636.


Chevron Meets Voluntary Shale Drilling Rules

Chevron has become the first energy company to meet a new set of shale gas drilling standards that go beyond existing state laws in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. The Pittsburgh-based center pledges to recycle drilling fluids, not use open waste pits and to reduce methane leaks.  


Scotland to Vote on Independence Today

Scotland voters will vote today on whether the country should become independent of the rest of the United Kingdom. More than 4.2 million people have registered to vote, the largest electorate ever in Scotland with 97 percent of those eligible registered. The turnout is expected to be high.


Men Charged in Connection to Australian Terror Plot

Two men were charged Thursday in connection with an ISIS terrorist plot in Australia. Prime Minister Tony Abbott says authorities obtained intelligence about a “demonstrated killing” in which alleged assailants planned to kidnap a member of the public, behead the victim and drape him or her in an ISIS flag.
