Octubafest, Ohio University's month-long celebration of the tuba and euphonium, is kicking off tonight at 8 p.m. in the School of Music Recital Hall.

Since 1974, the annual event has become a mainstay at hundreds of universities around the world.

It's marking its 16th year at Ohio University, due to the efforts of Jason Smith, OU associate professor of Tuba, who will be performing tonight.

Seven concerts have been scheduled throughout October, featuring a mix of guest artists, OU faculty and students performing in solo, chamber and ensemble capacities.

All performances will take place at 8 p.m. in the School of Music Recital Hall. The schedule is as follows:

Wednesday, Oct. 1: Jason Roland Smith, tuba

Friday, Oct. 3: Guest artist recital with Jeremy Lewis, tuba

Wednesday, Oct. 8: Scrapmetal Quartet, featuring Steve Darling and Zach Poller (euphoniums) with Max Gerhart and Jason Snoddy (tubas)

Sunday, Oct. 12: Ohio Brass

Thursday, Oct. 16: Steve Darling, euphonium

Sunday, Oct. 26: Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble & Trombone Choir

Thursday, Oct. 30: Undergrad Quartet, featuring John Rodesh and Preston Prather (euphoniums) with Webb Adelsperger and Andrew Tatman (tubas). Steven Darling (tuba) will also perform.
