Chip Mahaney has a big job. He leads digital strategies for the television stations owned by the E. W. Scripps Co. across the country.

Currently, he has 14 stations under his purview but after his company’s merger with Journal Communications, Inc. there will be a total of 34 television stations and 35 radio stations within the new corporation.

To meet future digital needs by broadcast entities, Scripps is experimenting and has developed a new form of monetizing digital content. In Cincinnati, users of WCPO’s website can pay a subscription fee for extra, in-depth digital content.

Mahaney says this subscription service is the first of its kind in broadcast in the country. He outlined the project to WOUB’s Tom Hodson as Mahaney visited campus this week as part of the 9th annual Scripps Day in the Scripps College of Communication.
