Public safety officials in at least three southeastern Ohio counties are urging people to be careful while driving due to icy road conditions.

Athens, Vinton and Hocking counties sent out alerts advising people about the dangerous road conditions. A portion of westbound U.S. Route 33 is closed from mile marker 7 due to a number of crashes because of ice.

Athens County is under a level 2 snow emergency and officials urged people not to drive unless necessary.  The Hocking County Sheriff's Office said in an alert that conditions were "consistent with level 3 ice conditions."  The county is under a level 3 advisory due to the icy roads but not under a snow emergency. Dispatchers said they've dealing with numerous reports of accidents but couldn't immedietely provide an exact number.
