New data shows that addiction to painkillers in Ohio is now on par with alcoholism.

The data shows that 33 percent of more than 87,000 clients treated for addiction received care for alcoholism compared to 32 percent for painkiller addiction in 2013.

The Media Network of Central Ohio reports Monday (http://cin.ci/1suCtsA) that painkiller addictions are up from 28 percent in 2012 and twice as many in 2008.

The data involves people who received publicly funded treatment in fiscal year 2013, the most recent data available.

The paper also says two Ohio boards reported that most of their treatment agencies served people with painkiller addictions last year.

That includes the Paint Valley Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Board, which serves people in Fayette, Highland, Pickaway, Pike, and Ross counties.
