On Thursday, more than 800 Ohio University students will fill the Convocation Center with presentations and exhibits of their original research, scholarship and creative work.

Ohio University’s Student Research and Creative Activity Expo, to be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., will feature projects on topics such as the role of newspapers in examining Ebola healthcare, the conversion of algae into aviation fuel, custom-built instruments for music composition and the ecological implications of re-routing the Hocking River.

The university hosts the Student Research and Creative Activity Expo annually to demonstrate the results of its student research, scholarship and creative activity inside and outside of the classroom.

Undergraduate, graduate student and medical student participants can choose to have their work reviewed by a panel of judges who award up to $200 in prize money to the top projects in various categories organized by discipline or related subjects. Presentations include live performances, interactive demonstrations, exhibits and posters. This year, 42 departments and schools will be represented.

Area middle school and high school students will visit the event to learn about conducting research and creative activity, as well as specific research and education opportunities for Ohio University students.

The event, which is open to the university community and general public, will offer free pizza to attendees until 1 p.m.

The WOUB Center for Public Media will host a live broadcast of the event at 12:30 p.m. on WOUB II, available to Athens-area Time Warner cable subscribers. The program also can be viewed live online at https://woub.org/2015/03/30/woub-live-stream-ohio-university-research-and….

In addition, the Expo will host two student contests on social media this year. Middle school and high school students can win a giant candy bar for posting the best Expo-related selfie to the Expo’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/OUStudentExpo. Ohio University students can enter the chance to win the giant candy bar by tweeting their best Expo-related selfies to @OUStudentExpo with the hashtag #studentexpo. Winners will be announced at 2 p.m. via those social media accounts.

The Student Research and Creative Activity Expo is sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Creative Activity and the Dean of the Graduate College, Office of the President, Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost and University Libraries.
