Troopers from the Athens Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on U. S. 33 just after 9:41 PM on June 12, 2015. Tonya R. Patterson, age 35, of The Plains, Ohio, was operating a tan 1999, Oldsmobile Bravada.

Mrs. Patterson was traveling westbound on U. S. 33, four tenths of a mile west of mile post fifteen. Mrs. Patterson drove off the right side of the roadway, came back onto the roadway and overcorrected. Then she slide off the right side of the roadway, struck an embankment, which caused the vehicle to become airborne. The vehicle overturned, ejecting Mrs. Patterson and rolled down an embankment coming to rest on its wheels in a ravine. Mrs. Patterson was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a safety belt and unsafe speed is a suspected factor in the cause of the crash. The crash investigation is still ongoing.

Athens County EMS, Athens City Fire Department, Richland Area Volunteer Fire Department and Athens County Coroner’s Office all responded and assisted at the crash scene.
