CINCINNATI (AP) – Cincinnati City Council has unanimously voted to formally suspend University of Cincinnati Police’s off-campus patrols.

Councilman Christopher Smitherman tells The Cincinnati Enquirer that university police can still go off-campus, still do their walking patrol and still make incoming students feel safe.

Smitherman says Wednesday’s vote puts the city’s current agreement with university police on hold as they work on a “new memorandum of understanding around traffic enforcement.”

The suspension comes in the wake of former UC Police Officer Ray Tensing’s fatal July 19 shooting of 43-year-old Samuel DuBose.

The city signed a memorandum of understanding in 2009 allowing off-campus patrols that gave UC officers the authority to enforce laws and police within the city, not just on campus.

Cincinnati Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell says he agrees with the suspension.
