TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture is giving farmers more money this year to help reduce the toxic algae in Lake Erie.

The department announced Friday that it is making $5 million available to plant cover crops on their land. Doing that can help prevent phosphorus from flowing into waterways and feeding harmful algae blooms.

Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown says he wrote to the department last month asking for more money for cover crops after heavy rains this summer left thousands of acres unplanted this year.

Authorities are closely monitoring the spreading algae on the lake. The bloom is expected to grow over the next month and could be one of the largest in recent years.
