The Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery will feature 59 Ohio artists in The Inaugural Juried Exhibition from Nov. 5, 2015 through Jan. 9, 2016.

Ohio artists (not enrolled in a degree-granting program, age 18 and older) were invited to submit up to three artworks in a statewide call for entries. Nearly 400 applications were submitted in a wide range of media including drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, ceramics, mixed media, and video. Exhibition jurors include Tyler Cann, Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus; Petra Kralickova, formerly of Ohio University, Athens; and Marilyn Simmons, SPACES, Cleveland. Opening Reception: Thursday, Nov. 5, 5-7 p.m.
At the public opening reception, a $1,000 Best of Show Award and three $500 Jurors Choice Awards will presented during a ceremony at 6 p.m.

Other upcoming events include:

Writing Real: Create Compelling Characters in Theatre, Thursday, Dec. 10, 5:30-8:30 p.m.

In order for a character to come alive on the stage, a character must have a driving need. Playwright and theatre director Tony Dallas will help writers explore the forces that compel a character through monologues and dialogue. It is suggested to read Oedipus the King by Sophocles in preparation for the workshop.

Family Workshop: Reduce, Reuse, ReCREATE! Saturday, Dec. 12, 2-4 p.m.

Art educator, performer, and Inaugural Juried Exhibition artist Eric Marlow will lead families through a workshop that will transform everyday recyclable materials into sculptures, toys, wearable art, and more. All children must be accompanied by a registered adult. This workshop is geared toward children ages 6-17.

In the Vern Riffe Center Lobby: Inside Looking Out: Creative Works by Ohio Prison Inmates, Nov. 5-Dec. 12

Inmates from several Ohio prison facilities create works of art with unexpected, imaginative recycled materials in addition to conventional media. The exhibition is presented by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, the OAC’s Riffe Gallery, and the Correctional Institution Inspection Committee.

All gallery events are free and open to the public. Secure your spot to Writing Real and the Family Workshop at riffegallery.org. Registration is open Nov. 6-Dec. 7.

The Inaugural Juried Exhibition is produced by the OAC’s Riffe Gallery with support from the OAC’s Individual Artist Grants and Services Program. Educational offerings are sponsored by the OAC’s Arts Learning program. Media support is provided by CD102.5, CityScene, Ohio Channel, WOSU, Ohio Magazine and WCBE 90.5 FM.
