CLEVELAND (AP) – Cleveland’s mayor has named the 13 members of a new commission that will recommend how to improve city police officers’ interactions with the public.

The members sworn in Tuesday include a law school dean, teacher, retired minister, community activist and three police officers, including the president of the city’s police union.

The Community Police Commission is viewed as a key provision in a reform-minded consent decree between Cleveland and the U.S. Department of Justice. The agreement was finalized in May after the DOJ issued an investigative report concluding that Cleveland police too often use excessive force and violate people’s civil rights.

Nearly 200 people applied to serve four-year terms on the commission. A diverse selection committee chose the 10 non-police members. The officers were appointed by police associations.
