The association representing attorneys in Ohio is opposing a proposed state constitutional amendment that would legalize marijuana.

The Ohio State Bar Association, which represents about 23,000 attorneys in the state, also said Thursday that it supports a separate proposed amendment that would make it illegal to establish a monopoly or cartel. Issue 2 was put on the ballot as a direct response to the marijuana legalization proposal, known as Issue 3.

The bar association’s statement says it takes no position on the merits of legal marijuana but doesn’t think the state constitution should be used a vehicle to make it happen. Legalizing and regulating marijuana, the statement said, should be left to the other branches of government.

Early voting starts Oct. 6 for the Nov. 3 election.
