The former middleweight had a successful college career with the Ohio State Buckeyes before he graduated in 2012. The former three-time NCAA qualifier went 105-24 with Ohio State and claimed All-American honors as a 165-pounder with a fourth-place finish at the 2011 NCAA Championships.

Sponseller was a University Freestyle National Champion in 2010 and 2011. He also won a bronze medal at the 2012 University World Championships. The former Buckeye placed twice at the U.S. Open in freestyle and finished fifth in the 2015 world team trials.
