CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – West Virginia health officials say flu season has arrived.

State health officer Dr. Rahul Gupta, Department of Health and Human Resources Secretary Karen Bowling and state schools Superintendent Michael Martirano encouraged parents on Monday to have their children vaccinated against the flu.

The officials attended an event at Piedmont Elementary School in Charleston to remind parents and students about the importance of flu vaccinations. Student Max DeBord received a flu shot during the event.

Gupta also shared tips to help stop the spread of the flu virus. They include washing hands frequently, wiping down frequently touched surfaces with a disinfectant and staying home when sick.
