This Saturday, Stuart’s Opera House will host a special backstage double-bill show featuring two critically acclaimed singer-songwriters: Canadian songwriter Doug Paisley and Joan Shelley, from Louisville, Kentucky.

For this intimate performance, the audience will sit on stage with the musicians. Show time is 8 p.m.

Toronto musician Doug Paisley’s 2010 album Constant Companion was hailed by Rolling Stone as a “nearly perfect singer-songwriter record.” The 2011 Nelsonville Music Festival alumnus continued to receive praise after the release of his most recent album, Strong Feelings, in 2014.

“It’s just 10 new songs. It’s a lot less simple and unadorned than other recordings I’ve made, but it’s just as earnest and straightforward as what I’ve done before,” said Paisley of Strong Feelings.

That statement matches Paisley’s low-key approach to his art and the effusive praise given to Constant Companion. MOJO, which included it in its top 10 albums of the year, extolled its “rare kind of purity” and declared “an anti-star is born.”

Joan Shelley

Joan Shelley has followed up her acclaimed 2014 album Electric Ursa with Over and Even, a quieter, more contemplative set recorded in her home state of Kentucky. Shelley has received praise from music heavyweights like Rolling Stone, NPR, and Pitchfork, with The New York Times stating “her music is folky and pastoral, with a sense of scale that makes her humble about her place in mankind and the universe, and her songs are serene but never complacent.”

Tickets are on sale for $12 in advance or $15 at the door. Stuart’s is also offering a special two-show $20 ticket special for this concert and the Lily and Madeleine backstage show on Friday, Nov. 13. For more information, visit stuartsoperahouse.org.
