Vinton County Vikings: Dec. 20-27< < Back to
Since Vinton County head coach, Matt Combs, earned his job in the 2000-01 season, he has experienced much success. Combs led the Vikings to 14 consecutive winning seasons, and on Dec. 22, he received his 250th career win over Zane Trace.
The Vikings entered the game energized and eager to snag the big win for Combs. Vinton County started the game with a 18-2 run. Vikings’ standout, Tristan Bartoe, scored 12 of his 26 points in the first quarter.
The Vikings have proved to be a great team in the paint this season. However their performance against the Pioneers proved they can beat teams in more ways than one. Vinton County utilized 3-pointers in its game plan, taking more shots than usual.
Zane Trace started to find more of a groove in the second quarter, and continued its momentum throughout the rest of the game. Quinton Davidson scored a team leading 15 points for the Pioneers. His teammate, Pierce Mowery, also contributed, scoring 14 points and seven rebounds.
Zane Trace evened things out to make it a more competitive matchup; however, the Pioneers couldn’t seem to overcome the initial first quarter deficit.
The Vikings held strong and won the game 56-44 to get Coach Combs his 250th career win.
Vinton County remains perfect at 7-0. The Vikings hope to continue their streak, by traveling to Southeastern on Dec. 29.
