A winter storm passing through the region has prompted weather warnings, closings and cancellations.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Athens, Meigs, Morgan, Perry, Vinton and Washington Counties in effect until 9 p.m Tuesday. Fairfield, Hocking, Pickaway, Pike and Ross Counties are under a Winter Storm Warning until noon.

These counties could see four to six inches of snow accumulation. The storm may cause hazardous roadways and reduced visibility. Use caution when driving.

Athens and Vinton Counties are under a Level 2 snow emergency, according to the Sheriff Rodney Smith and Sheriff Shawn Justice.

This means roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Only those who need to drive should be out on the roadways. Hocking, Morgan and Ross Counties are under a Level 1 snow emergency.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday for Gallia, Jackson and Lawrence Counties and until 6 a.m. for Adams, Franklin, Licking, Scioto, Fairfield, Hocking, Pickaway, Pike and Ross Counties. Three to six inches of snow accumulation is possible.

Ohio University Athens Campus is closed until 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. Dining halls, Baker University Center, Living Learning Center and Ping Recreation Center will remain open. The second floor of Alden Library is open with all other floors opening at noon.

Daytime classes at Hocking College are cancelled.

All Athens County government offices are closed with the exception of the Athens County Prosecutor’s office, which will open at noon.
