WASHINGTON (AP) – The state will receive nearly $1 million in federal funds to help protect Ohioans from the mosquito-borne Zika virus.

The grant of more than $900,000 to Ohio from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is part of nearly $60 million awarded to states, cities, and territories to help in their fight against the virus and health problems that can result from Zika infection.

The money will support activities to protect the health of the public, especially pregnant women. Those activities include epidemiologic surveillance and investigation, improving mosquito control and strengthening laboratory capacity. It also will support participation in a program monitoring pregnant women with Zika and their infants.

Zika virus spreads to people primarily through the bite of infected mosquitoes.

The new funding will be available August 1.
