COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – A judge is expected to rule soon in the case of an Ohio school district challenging the Obama administration’s rule on transgender bathrooms in schools.

A federal judge expects a decision within a week on whether the Highland Local School District in Morrow County could lose federal funds for its treatment of an elementary student who’s biologically male but identifies as female.

The district says allowing the student to use the girls’ restroom would jeopardize privacy rights of other students, while not doing so could cost it $1 million annually. Officials requested an injunction, noting they made other accommodations for the child.

Eleven states have sued to challenge the federal directive that public schools let students use bathrooms and locker rooms matching their gender identity.
